Mr PECK ZHI CHANG

MY ASPIRATION TO BE A COMPETENT LAB TECHNICIAN

Peck Zhi Chang successfully completed a Nitec in Applied Food Science in 2011 followed by a Higher Nitec in Chemical Technology in 2017. He embarked on the first intake of Work-Study Programme leading to Diploma in Applied Science (Chemical Laboratory Technology) in 2017 as he saw the opportunity to upgrade his knowledge and skills while working in a quality control laboratory in Sunward Pharmaceuticals. He secured a sponsorship from his employer to support his Work-Study Programme at Singapore Polytechnic. In addition, he wanted to have the hands on skills to better prepare himself for the workforce in which he aspired to advance his career as a Chemist.

During his studies in ITE, he struggled with scientific calculations and theories and often needed guidance from his lecturers to operate instruments. However after successfully completing the 18-month Work-Study Programme, he is now a competent Laboratory Technician operating High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC) for analysis of active ingredients in pharmaceuticals. In addition to HPLC, he is trained in the performance and optimisation of Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Ultraviolet–Visible Spectroscopy (UV Vis) for the qualitative and quantitative analyses of pharmaceutical samples.

Not only the Work-Study programme gave Zhi Chang the confidence to operate instruments as part of his job responsibilities, he also picked up essential skills to troubleshoot technical issues related to the instrument. He also aspires in the future to master the skills to apply more sophisticated instruments such as Ultra HPLC.

Zhi Chang is very grateful to be nominated as recipient for the Singapore National Institute of Chemistry (SNIC) Gold Medal. He is motivated to continue his studies to pursue a degree next year.
