Industry Chapter

   Dr Tan Chong Kiat chongkiat
   Chairman

Chong Kiat is a Scientist in the Analytical R&D Department at Procter & Gamble Singapore Innovation Centre. He is in charge of the study of colloid phases in hair and skincare products via thermal analysis, rheology and in-line process analytical tools.
 
Prior to joining Procter & Gamble, he was a Senior Member of Technical Staff at ATREC Pte Ltd. He applied his organic synthesis training to making and study of various defence related materials.

Chong Kiat obtained his PhD from the National University of Singapore making contributions to the field of organocatalytic asymmetric halogenation of alkenes. He also studied the use of polymer supports for solid-phase organic synthesis of various nitrogen-containing carbon heterocycles. Both studies have resulted in over 20 publications.

   Dr Shu Ann

Shu Ann is an Innovation Manager, Biotech Platform Architect at National Health Innovation Centre Singapore (NHIC).
 
In her current role as an innovation manager, she manages innovation projects and provides strategic guidance to these project teams to enable the commercial translation of institutional R&D projects. Besides managing innovation projects, Shu Ann has also been involved in developing national-level programs that foster innovation and enterprise activities in the healthcare and biomedical field. Her interest lies in health/biotech venture creation and venture building. 

Prior to joining NHIC, Shu Ann held a postdoctoral position developing small molecule and peptide inhibitors against Dengue/Zika non-structural proteins. She obtained her PhD from the Australian National University (ANU), where she specialized in Protein and Enzyme Engineering.

   Miss Esther Loh Wei Tian
   Secretary

Esther is a Manager at Deloitte & Touche Financial Advisory Services Pte Ltd and was recognized as one of the leading intellectual property (IP) strategists in IAM 300. 

Previously, she was an IP Management Consultant at IP ValueLab, an enterprise engagement arm of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore. In addition, she was with a technology transfer office, managing more than 500 IPs from national research institutes. 

Before joining the IP industry, she was a researcher at a multinational company where she translated the technologies of her own led projects to potential products for the market. She has 12 patent families under her name as co-inventor.

Esther obtained her Masters and her BSc (Honours) in Chemistry from the National University of Singapore.

   Dr Wei Ying

Wei Ying is Director of Clinical Affairs, Esco Ventures Pte Ltd. She has extensive experience in scientific research, medical affairs, clinical studies and health products registration and launches in the Asia Pacific region, across a wide range of disease and health benefit areas. She has developed an expert knowledge of Good Clinical Practice application, strategic clinical trial planning and execution, and clinical program quality management. She developed, established, and maintained good relations with research institutes in APAC.

Wei Ying obtained her PhD in Chemistry specializing in the area of Food Science & Nutrition from the National University of Singapore, and postdoctoral training in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, National University Hospital. She received her MD from Guangxi Medical University and practised in China.

Esther obtained her Masters and her BSc (Honours) in Chemistry from the National University of Singapore.



Low Chang Yee

Since graduating from NUS in 2012 with a BSc in Applied Science (Chemistry), Chang Yee has accumulated some research experience while working in NTU. She then went on to explore areas outside of academia, working in a start-up that provides safety and efficacy studies for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. She now works in a pharmaceutical contract drug manufacturing organization. Joining this chapter, she hopes to learn more from experienced industry professionals, while paying it forward to assist individuals who would like to embark on a career in Chemistry. She holds a Graduate Certificate in Drug Development from Temple University and an Advanced Certificate in Training and Assessment from the Institute of Adult Learners.

Trained as a synthetic organic chemist, Filza holds a PhD from Nanyang Technological University. She carried out her doctoral studies in collaboration with the Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases, where she focused her research on discovering solutions to access novel compounds with potent antimalarial activity. Since completing her Ph.D., Filza's experience ranges from medical affairs to market access and clinical research in both the pharma and MedTech space. She recently joined J&J as a Medical Science Liaison, looking after the multiple myeloma portfolio.

Dr Fu Xiao
Treasurer

Fu Xiao joined BASF as a research scientist and was in charge of various research projects in different industrial applications. His expertise includes the water treatment, antimicrobial treatment and oilfield chemicals. Fu Xiao joined Nalco Champion, An Ecolab Company in 2017 to focus on his research application in oilfield chemicals.

Fu Xiao obtained his PhD in Chemistry from the National University of Singapore and his Bachelor degree from Peking University, China. During his PhD study, his research topic was the organocatalyst catalysed asymmetric synthesis. He published more than ten papers and one patent as first author and co-author. He was awarded the Reaxys PhD Prize in 2010, which is the leading prize for PhD students in chemistry around the globe.

Ming Jun is currently working as a principal engineer at EMK Technologies. His current research covers R&D of industrial speciality chemicals, formulations of a novel or customised special chemicals for semiconductors usage. Since 2016, he is erving as an adjunct research scientist at the Division of Chemitry of Biologicial Chemistry, Nanyang Technological Univeristy. 

Ming Jun obtained his PhD in chemistry in 2010 from Nanyang Technological University. Upon graduation, he joined STATS ChipPAC Ltd, a wafer-level packaging company as a senior process engineer. in 2012, he joined Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering as a research fellow in the area of organic and medicinal chemistry.

Joe obtained his PhD in Chemistry from the National University of Singapore and his Master degree in Chemistry from Chinese Academy of Sciences. After graduated from NUS, Joe joined the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), A*STAR., Singapore.

Then he started to work as Chief Operating Officer in EASYGO PTE LTD and AION SCIENTIFIC PTE LTD. EASYGO is a professional Travel Agency, EASYGO PTE LTD is a company which specialises in free & Easy travel, Group travel, Luxury tour packages for our clients. It also provides hotel booking, air tickets booking, local attraction ticket purchase and other related services.

AION SCIENTIFIC PTE LTD is a Singapore based company, as a service distributor of equipment, glassware, consumables and research chemicals for local and regional research laboratories.    Dr James Wang Jian Min

James is national sales manager for Procter & Gamble Chemicals Greater China & South Korea. He is responsible for oleochemicals total Go-To-Market Strategy in the above-mentioned markets. He owns the Revenue and Profitability target of Procter & Gamble Chemicals. He is a Procter & Gamble “The CEO Award” winner. The CEO Award is given to only 3% of the total Procter & Gamble employees.

James obtained his PhD in Chemistry from the National University of Singapore and obtained a Master’s degree from Beijing University of Chemical Technology. His research focuses on organocatalyst catalyzed asymmetric synthesis & synthesis, and Characterization of helical polymers & co-polymers.

Wendy is an Intellectual Property Specialist at ResMed, a company that helps people stay out of the hospital, thereby empowering them to live healthier, higher-quality lives. She supports the Oxygen Product Development team of ResMed in IP-related matters. Prior to joining ResMed, she was at a boutique IP law firm where she advised clients on their patent filing strategy, drafted patent specifications and assisted in worldwide prosecution of patent applications

Wendy obtained her PhD in Chemistry from the Nanyang Technological University and her BSc (Honours) in Chemistry from the National University of Singapore. She is a co-author of 11 research articles in top international peer-reviewed journals, which include Nature Chemistry, the Journal of the American Chemical Society, and Green Chemistry. Due to her contributions to the development of a green chemistry technology which was recognised to prevent pollution and have broad applicability in industry, she was awarded the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award by the Environmental Protection Agency, USA, in 2011.
     

 

Yangjiean   Dr Jie An Yang

   co-Chairman 

Jie An is a Trainee Patent Attorney within the chemistry/life-sciences group of Davies Collison Cave, where he is involved in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications in pharmaceutical sciences, nanotechnology and material sciences.

Jie An has a research background in pharmacokinetics, inorganic chemistry, nanotechnology and polymer sciences. He obtained his BSc (Honours) degree in Chemistry at the National University of Singapore and moved on to obtain his PhD in Chemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. During his PhD studies, his work centred on investigating the interaction of nanoparticles at the biomolecular and cellular level, ultimately cumulating in the publication in several peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Prior to joining Davies Collison Cave, Jie An spent about two years at Mitsui Chemicals doing polymer research, exploring the marketability and applications of propriety technologies.

Mihaiela Stuparu
Asst. Prof. Mihaiela Stuparu
Nanyang Technological University

Asst. Prof. Mihaiela Stuparu is an Assistant Professor in Chemistry at NTU. She obtained her doctoral degree in the group of Prof. A. D. Schlüter from ETH-Zürich, Switzerland. In 2009, she received the Ambizione fellowship from the Swiss National Science Foundation. Her research focus is on the preparation of corannulene-based polymers differing in their chemical composition and architecture together with studying their properties.

Dr. Fung is an instructor of Chemistry at NUS. He obtained his doctoral degree in the group of Prof. Sam Li Fong Yau from NUS. His research focus is on the application of digital technology and learning sciences in chemistry and STEM courses.

Maha is currently an undergraduate student at Nanyang Technological University, pursuing Chemistry, and is interested in organic chemistry. Maha is also interested in creating a more diverse and inclusive academic and industrial scene in STEM.

Ismail


Ismail Samsudin is currently pursuing a PhD degree in Chemistry at the National University of Singapore. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from the same university in 2018 and 2019 respectively and was awarded the Sim Geok Soo gold medal in recognition for his research work. His research interests lie in heterogenous catalysis and materials chemistry.

 

Ismail is passionate about engaging and enhancing the student communities he belong in. He is currently the President of the Chemistry Graduate Society in NUS, which is a student organisation representing the chemistry graduate students in NUS. During his undergraduate studies, he was the President of the Chemical Sciences Society, which is the Chemistry Graduate Society’s undergraduate equivalent.

Winnie Faustinelie is currently a year 2 student from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), majoring in Chemistry and Biological Chemistry, known as CBC, and expected to take specialization in Food Science and Technology. Apart from her study, she is also active in her Faculty Club, which is School of Physical and Mathematical Science (SPMS) Club, currently a part of the 15th Management Committee. Her role in SPMS club is as CBC Representative.   Being a CBC Representative, she works closely with the CBC committee members in order to achieve programs that will benefit CBC students, be it CBC division night, Industrial Visit, sharing sessions by the seniors, etc. She believes by doing so, CBC students are able to be more familiar with their courses and at the same time, make more friends. This optimistic girl believes that one can strive through experiences and challenges. And here comes to her decision, stepping out of her comfort zone to try new things, such as stepping up as CBC Representative.

Rui Yang is currently a Year 3 student from the National University of Singapore (NUS), majoring in Chemistry. His research interest lies in Computational Chemistry as he believes that data is the new language and the ability to use computational language to extract useful information from large bodies of data is crucial in our world today. He is currently the President of the American Chemical Society (ACS) Student Chapter at NUS. He works with the NUS Department of Chemistry to organise various programmes such as the ACS-NUS Research Symposium to promote Chemistry in the community.  Rui Yang believes in the importance of collaboration and interdisciplinary efforts in research and scientific discovery. He hopes to establish a stronger relationship between students, researchers and industry professionals.

Ren Huibai is a fresh graduate student from National University of Singapore (NUS), Food Science and Technology (FST). She researched in the processing of dairy related products and analysed product performance, studying their rheological properties and the behaviour of casein micelle. She also validated the simulation of Ultra-High Temperature (UHT) process lines in FrieslandCampina Development Singapore to examine the microbiological safety and fouling reaction. She has also participated in NUS FoodTech Challenge 2019 that developed alternative protein sources to replace meat in the food market. She investigated the protein composition and processing methods of peanut powder to produce suitable meat analogue for traditional Asian sauces. Huibai is passionate about food sustainability and safety. She believes that with advancing technology and research in food chemistry, we can support the growing global population and promote a healthier living.

Christopher Kevin Wijaya2

 

Christopher Kevin Wijaya is an undergraduate student studying Chemistry and Biological Chemistry (CBC) in Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore. His main interest lies within organic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis, which he is currently working on with the aid of theoretical and computational tools. He believes these tools can be applied to various fields of chemistry to give fresh new perspectives that could lead to interesting discoveries.Apart from his research interests, he was the CBC representative of the 14th management committee of the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences club. He was in charge of the CBC students’ welfare, and together with his team, they organized events such as industrial visit, reopening of CBC Library, and Mad Scientist Day. As a way of giving back to the students’ community, he hopes these events benefited them and created meaningful experience.

Raymond Tio

Raymond Tio is an undergraduate from NTU, majoring in Chemistry and Biological Chemistry (CBC). His research interest focuses on drug design and organic synthesis, which he is currently doing under the guidance of Prof. Loh Teck Peng. Apart from his studies and research, he is also active in the CBC club, managing CBC students’welfare.

Karen

Karen Prasetio is a current year 2 student in Nanyang Technological University, majoring in Chemistry and Biological Chemistry. She has previously done research in the field of organic synthesis of Montanacin D and also using metathesis to form butenolides. Her main interest is in the field of biological chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry as she believes that knowledge in these areas can help find ways to make healthcare more available and attainable by people.

Apart from her interests, she is also part of NTU's CBC Division, where she collaborates with other students to garner students' interest in the subject beyond the classroom walls. Besides academics, she enjoys reading books and trying out new things to step out of her comfort zone.

Eugene Photo

Eugene Thong is currently a Year 2 student from NUS Faculty of Science, majoring in Chemistry. He has a Diploma in Biomedical Science from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, with an option in Medicinal Chemistry, and he is interested in the areas of analytical and medicinal chemistry.

 

Eugene is the President of the 33rd NUS Chemical Sciences Society (CSS). He works closely with the NUS Department of Chemistry to organise and plan events for the NUS Chemistry undergraduate cohort, with the aim to improve their student life experience, through programmes such as Chemistry Camp and Chemistry Night. He believes that in addition to studying, students should also focus on their personal well-being, making new friends, and trying new things; CSS is the place where students can achieve all these.
