Affiliation

Toshiya Watanabe graduated from Tokyo Institute of Technology with PhD degree in 1994. He has experienced R&D and Executive Manager for TOTO LTD from 1985 to 2001. He has been invited to a professor of The University of Tokyo from 2001. He is currently a Professor of Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology of The University of Tokyo. He is also a Professor of Department of Technology Management for Innovation, The graduate school of Engineering, The University of Tokyo.
He has served as Professional Committee Member  of Council for Science and Technology Policy, Professional Committee Member of Intellectual Property Strategy Headquarters and other many committee members of Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and Cabinet Office.

1989 The Institute of Electrostatics Japan Award for Development of Ceramic Electrostatic Chuck for Semiconductor wafer
1998  Innovation in Real Material Awards for photocatalytic titanium dioxide coatings, which provides self-cleaning, antifogging sterilizing and deodorizing properties.  
1999 Nikkei BP award for development of application technology utilizing TiO2 photocatalyst
2000  DR. Ulrich Awards for TiO2 sol gel coating for self-cleaning
2004  The Prime Minister Prize in industry-university-government cooperation,
2006  The 6th Yamazaki-Teiichi Prize
2009  Academic Awards of the Ceramic Society of Japan

Recent activity

Current research field of Toshiya Watanabe is material science and also intellectual property management. He has authored eight books. Five of them are in social science field and three of them are in natural science field. He has invented approximately 200 patents in functional material and photocatalytic self-cleaning technology. He authored approximately 100 academic papers in natural science field and also in social science field.
